So let’s get stuck in…
Arriving in Quito As Digital Nomads
Landing in Quito was like stepping into a new world where it felt like the past and present were existing together. At an elevation of 9,350 feet above sea level, it’s a city quite literally in the clouds and the altitude can take a little getting used to. So don’t have anything too adventurous planned for your first few days.
Quito’s history and vibrant culture struck me immediately. Seeing the local women in their colourful traditional clothing was pretty special. Still, what genuinely set it apart from other places I have been was the warmth of its people and the breathtaking views that greeted me each day from our apartment.
The Perfect Spot To Work: Our Apartment
Our Airbnb was more than just a place to stay; it was our quiet place amidst the busy city. High up on the hillside, it had great views of Quito, making every sunset something we looked forward to. The aesthetics of our Airbnb blended traditional Ecuadorian décor with modern comforts, including a dedicated workspace that overlooked the city. It was here, with the beautiful views of Quito, that I spent my days working remotely from my laptop.
One of the best parts is that there were many really great apartments to choose from, all were super affordable and in safe neighbourhoods.

Work-Life Balance in Quito
Establishing a work routine in Quito was surprisingly easy. The city’s rhythm encouraged a healthy work-life balance as they seemed to have more activity in the evenings which was when I had my free time.
Our mornings started with a cup of Ecuadorian coffee, followed by a walk around the apartment area to explore new streets, find hidden gems and of course to head to the shop for supplies. One of my favourite nearby parks to go for a walk was Itchimbia park.
In the afternoons, I dedicated time to work, taking advantage of our apartment’s natural light and fresh air. And when the workday ended, it was time to explore more.
Exploring Quito and The Surrounding Area
During our time off we explored everything from the breathtaking heights of Cotopaxi Volcano to the bustling stalls of Otavalo Market – the biggest indigenous market in South America. Each adventure made us appreciate Ecuador’s rich culture and heritage more and more. Our interactions with locals were always fun and friendly. Someone taught me how to haggle in Otavalo, people were waving at us and posing for a picture while getting their shoes polished, and someone was telling us where to get a good-priced meal in the historic centre.

Quito’s rich history is evident as soon as you step into its streets. The city centre has stunning colonial architecture and beautiful squares filled with locals and tourists alike. We spent hours exploring this part of the city and still don’t feel we’ve seen enough.
The old town was one of my favourite places to explore. It’s a mix of colonial architecture, markets, and lively squares. Walking through its cobblestone streets felt like travelling back in time. The city also offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking the nearby mountains or visiting one of the many parks and gardens.
But Quito is not just about its historic centre. We also took trips to nearby towns and villages, including Mindo, which is known for its cloud forest and abundance of wildlife. Another must-visit spot was Baños, a small town surrounded by volcanic landscapes and home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Ecuador.

Why Quito is Ideal for Digital Nomads
Quito is great for digital nomads because of its low costs of living, great wifi connection, community of remote workers, and cafes and coworking spaces. Challenges like adjusting to the altitude or navigating the language barrier were overcome with the support of our apartment host and fellow nomads. The city’s mixture of home comforts and natural beauty, along with its cultural depth, makes Quito an ideal destination for those looking to work and explore somewhere new.

Looking back at my time in Quito, I can totally say it changed me. Diving into such a lively city pumped up my motivation and opened my eyes to different cultures. It hit home for me that the world can literally be our office, with endless possibilities for where and how we work.
Quito, with its amazing culture and friendly vibes, is a top spot for anyone curious about the digital nomad life. It’s not just about seeing cool stuff outside your window; it’s about really changing the way you see working.
